"Birdland" was the
first record made by the Starlighters, with Van as composer and
lead singer. As the record industry switched from producing large,
breakable 78 rpm singles to manufacturing 45 rpm vinyl records,
"Birdland" was among the first to be offered in the
smaller format.
Young Van joined the Performance
Royalty Society of Broadcast Music, Incorporated (BMI) in New
York City to exploit his "Birdland" copyright. His mother,
Lillian, did not cash his first royalty check, made payable for
eleven cents, and thereby encouraged Van to set high goals for
himself.
